Noise associated with roads can be basically divided into the following situations :

  • Assessment of new roads or upgrades and modifications to existing roads.
  • Assessment of noise received at proposed lots and residences within subdivisions.
  • Assessment of noise received at proposed residential or noise sensitive premises (apartment, hotels, student accommodation etc).

Other noise sensitive premises include such usages as schools and child care centres.

Although the above related to differing projects and types of projects they are all assessed under State Planning Policy 5.4.

It is worth noting that with the exception of new noise sensitive developments located adjacent to future major roads, noise monitoring of the existing road traffic is required. This monitoring is used to calibrate the noise model and determine the relationship between the day and night periods. However, under the Policy, it is worth noting that this monitoring cannot be undertaken during school holidays.
